Eighth Grade
Our Eighth graders will leave Middle School knowing they are prepared for the challenges of High School and beyond.
Students meeting specific criteria as seventh grade students will be placed in Algebra for the eighth grade year. Algebra is a high school level class and moves at a rapid pace. Students who successfully complete the class will be allowed to enter Geometry as high school freshman. This course is a study of numerical and algebraic relations using linear equations, factoring, fractions, and algebra in a plane.
Students are selected for this course based upon their overall performance as seventh grade math students. Higher-level mathematical concepts will be explored as students gain confidence and mastery in their ability to problem solve. When appropriate, students will work with Algebra students to master algebraic concepts.
Students will focus on reading, writing, and analyzing literature. An emphasis will be placed on learning how to formulate thoughts into well-written paragraphs, stories, and essays. In addition, students will gain exposure to various types of literary work through quarterly novels and short stories. Spelling and vocabulary will naturally extend from literature read in class.
Students will learn an overview of fundamental Chemistry and Physics. Hands-on science activities will be a regular part of each unit. Students will participate in a science fair. Students who receive an A or B average for the year in this course, score above the 70th percentile on the ACT Aspire Test during their 8th grade year, and have the recommendation of the teacher will be allowed to enroll in Biology as freshmen, which is usually considered a Sophomore course.
Students will focus on the second half of American History, from 1865 to present day. The Western Movement, World Wars One and Two, and America’s changing role in the world will be highlighted. In addition, the United States Constitution and governmental structure will be taught, and all students must pass the U.S. Constitution test as a graduation requirement. Geography and economics are integrated into the curriculum.
